You can’t escape the Canadians today. But Patrick
Watson is one you shouldn’t run from. The Montreal
based singer/songwriter and recent recipient of a
nomination for the Juno award for best new singer’s
latest effort is ‘The Great Escape’; an animated
short that is as humble as it is annoying to know it
was on Grey’s Anatomy once.
Scarlet vixen herself Feist will be working the
tour lines in Canada come May to support her
upcoming release, the Reminder on April 23rd [see
link below for album details]. Before you get all
Red Dawn on us, Feist said she will be announcing a
summer tour for the US shortly.

Boston bomb threats ain’t got nothing on what
Mastadon and others are about to lay down for the
upcoming Aqua Teen Hunger Force Movie soundtrack.
April 13th will show the world that Meathead and
Master Shake can shake their digital asses to the
likes of The Hold Steady, the aforementioned
Mastadon, Killer Mike, MC Chris and many more. The
soundtrack will appear a week before the release.
What do suits, Go Go legs, and a chandelier have
in common? They all make an awkward appearance in
The Raptures newest video ‘Pieces of People We
Love’. Sure the moving picture version is a bit –
minimal? But you can’t help but love it when band
members stare into the camera and try to justify a
suave move with a puppy dog frown.
Just because you’re stuck in the studio working
on your second album, Beirut, doesn’t mean you can’t
give us some love in the meantime. Right? Well thank
goodness Zach Condon and company are more reliable
than the our significant others because the troupe
has dropped a new PompeiiEP which
includes the song ‘Fountains and Tramways’ and
‘Napoleon on the Bellerophon’. While not quite new –
the songs were recorded before the bands debut
effort Gulag Orkestar – it only takes a small effort
to satisfy the band’s growing and rabid fan base.
The songs are available for download via eMusic.com,
which you should download for your roadtrip to SWSW
on March 14th where the band will be playing with
the likes of Mountain Goats, Wolf and Cub and more
at the 4AD stage.
Cinematic Orchestra are finally getting it
together! It’s been almost five years since we’ve
heard from Jason Swinscoe and his troupe – since the
release of Everday. But get ready for a mind
bending emotional journey. Word around the campfire
is this album was approached as a soundtrack of
sorts for an unknown screenplay that may or may not
ever see the light of day. Thankfully, the ten track
upcoming effort Ma Fleur will and you can be
blessed with a journey of melancholy bliss – that is
to say a duality of emotions. The originally idea of
the album/screenplay was journey from life to death.
Domino Records will be releasing the effort
stateside while Ninja Tunes will be handling the
European version. Guest vocalists include that of
Fontella Bass, Patrick Watson, and Lou Rhodes.

Billboard is reporting that the Pipettes, a 60’s
revival pop trio have signed with Interscope US
subsidiary Cherrytree. Import savvy folk already
know of the gorgeously underplayed debut We Are
The Pipettes released last year on their UK
label Memphis Industries. Cherrytree should release
the same album here in the states sometime in late
summer. Cherrytree is no slouch when it comes to its
female roster that includes a little known biscut
named Feist. You can catch the chicks at SXSW this
year as they flex their new record deal muscles or
on the road in select cities overseas.

It’s such the fucking rage these days – user
videos. I remember when Debbie Gibson (Deborah to
you, fanboy) ran a contest for Out of the Blue. I
had a tight sock puppet choreographed effort ready
to go but alas, never materialized. Since then,
everyone from Dove body wash to Doritos is plugging
the John-Q public to do their dirty work. The Hold
Steady are none too different. Of course, their
results were less than popular but that shouldn’t
stop a good thing. The Hold Steady are retooling
their video upload plan this time to solicit fans to
cut a video from any track off of last years slick
release Boys and Girls In America.
What do you get? Reported prizes are scarce but
guaranteed is a $1000 cash prize plus other
‘packages’. Head over to

for more details.
The small band that did is ready to do it again.
The boy wonders of The Arctic Monkeys – indie’s
favorite rags-to-riches story of last year – are
readying their follow up Favourite Worst Nightmare
in April [see previous story here]. But the band is
really focusing on tackling the US this time around.
Case in point: the new single ‘Brainstorm’ will hit
US soil on April 17 with B-Sides galore put together
by emcee Dizzee Rascal. ‘Temptation Greets You Like
Your Naughty Friend’ will be cut in several
different versions for the exclusive track offering
on both 7”, 10” and CD. Can’t wait that long? Well
the digital version is scheduled to become available
on April 2nd. Who needs tangible, right?

Sure we give you the stream of the first single
off of Leed’s act Kaiser Chiefs upcoming Yours
Truly, Angry Mob called ‘Ruby’ but you are a visual
child – no time for the boring downloads and iPod
transfers. You need instant image satisfaction.
Well, we got you. And so do the Chiefs. The sure to
be radio friendly and concert hall get-up song
complete with desert landscapes and Mars loneliness
awaits.
In other Kaiser Chief news, the band has confirmed
they will be playing this years Glastonbury festival
with the likes of The Who, Acade Fire, Lily Allen,
The Rakes, and Arctic Monkeys. The group will be
heading to the States in April for a nationwide tour
to support said album.
Getting Lily Allen to like anything these days my
involve alcohol and ruffies. The outspoken UK
songbird who has dissed everything from
relationships, the industry as a whole and heroin
addicts like Pete Doherty has added iTunes service
to her hate list.
In a recent interview with Sound Opinions, Lily
said:
“…iTunes [is] kind of bullying people into corners
by making sure they have extra, you know, extra
songs so they can put them on the front page. And
they won’t [advertise] your album unless you kind of
give them extra material and so on. And we’ve kind
of been backed into a corner. We want to do this
remix, but the remix isn’t ready, but they need it
delivered by today and blah blah blah. So I said,
‘Okay, fine, give iTunes the rubbish remix, and then
what I’ll do I’ll get the people remixing it to do a
good remix and then we’ll give it away for free on
MySpace.”
Sure we gave you the 411 on the Chicago based
quartet The Ponys yesterday but we failed to give
you the goods on their first single off the upcoming
Turn The Lights Out album titled ‘Double Vision’.
Portland trio Menomena is ready to get their rock
asses on the road. Hot off the heels of their slick
new effort Friend and Foe, the dudes will kick off
things in March at Cali’s Café du Nord and play
their perverbial rears at SXSW to all the labels
that said ‘ney’ and continue on for the month long
voyage.

band will be hitting the road days before across the

charged duo Mars Volta are hitting the Australian

South Park meets Parappa The Rapper in Chin Up Chin
Up’s latest video ‘This Harness Can’t Ride
Anything’. The Technicolor chaos is reminiscent of
any acid trip to date. You never did acid? How did
you make it thru the nineties then?
Remixes can flat out suck. It’s a club beat fused
with a Phil Collins classic often times and both can
result in terminal injury. Thankfully, there’s
Telefon Tel Aviv – a nine year old outfit that
started in a basement out of New Orleans and
culminated to one of the best unheard mix duo on the
scene today. But they know you haven’t heard of
they…yet. That’s why the group has assembled
Remixes Compiled – a twelve track alternating

Because Antibalas Afrobeat Orchestra was just too
damn long and misleading, the Brooklyn based horn
driven beat group has gone simple (read: Antibalas)
and landed a major label debut thru ANTI. And if the
Spanish meaning of the word – which by the way is
bulletproof – is any indication, these guys can hang
with the best of rest including TV On The Radio,
Gomez and more that share their unique style.
Security is an eight track list that bobs thru

previous resume includes Stereolab and Tortoise.
