SXSW continues to consume us and our binge
habits. Thankfully, the music has finally
started and we can blow off some much delayed steam
on the dance floors.
The Dirty Dog Bar hosted the Fratellis - a
Scottish troupe that play some wickedly grand pop
rock for a simple trio. One of the highlights
was their superb effort 'Henrietta'.
The Fratellis (Jon photo above) from
Glasgow follow up their Brit Award For
Breakthrough Act with a kick-ass set of
sleazy pop rock at SXSW.
Mexico City has had a big push of musicians at
this years SXSW. One of the highlights was
Austin TV - a five piece non vocal act. That's
right - no words - just instrumental bliss. One of
the highlights was the band playing one of our
favorites 'Rucci'.
Who the hell needs words when you
can play it masked?
Glaskow represented on Thrusday again with in a
ball crushing way thanks in large part to the femme
lucious act The Hedrons. The four-part all
chick group rocked out Ramones-esq punk-post rock
tunes. The ladies will be hitting the West
Coast after SXSW as well as part of their first
stateside tour. We highly recommend you check
them out if possible. They'll be joined on the road
with oppositely gorgeous ac Scanners and their
melodically overlapping graces.
Scottish
heartbreaker and vocal virtuoso Tippi of
The Hedrons ripped thru an outdoor set.

LA based Angel Garcia and Greg Hernandez - best
known as Mezklah took their tribal based reggae and
part psychedelic Latin flare to the people at SXSW
full on with backtracks of instruments that made the
duo sound like a recording house of dozens.
When he's not picking fights with Jack White,
Pete Townsend transcends rock icon status and just
engulfs your attention. Of course his press
conference was the typical flare of forward thinking
Pete as he explained his theories on how people will
own a third of a copyright to a song under his
musical community structure. Sucks if you own the
bridge all the time.
Townsend had
a brief Q&A session hosted by VH1's Bill
Flanagan.
Gary Cansell and company known as NeatPeople are
finally getting some new material to their fans.
It’s been since September of ’06 but the band is
ready to release a new single. ‘Carry You Upwards’
will be released on April 23rd via download and rare
7” print. Get cozy with some of the band’s past
material by checking out the tracks linked below.
Any fan of The Shins would be doing themselves a
favor by checking out this UK act.

order, grab the passport and head out!!

You don’t want revenge on Interpol. The mood
trance music group is willing to work with their
rabid fans wanting more new material. Case in point:
the band has confirmed that they are currently in
the studio working on a follow-up to their 2004’s
well received Antics. Rich Costey, of Muse fame, is
working behind the glass on the as-of-yet-untitled
album.
Speaking with NME, Interpol guitarist Daniel Kessler
spoke of the bands Capitol debut and the progression
of the album-in-progress:
“We had keyboards on from the start which we’ve
never done before. It’s like a fifth member. There’s
a lot more texture, and interesting sounds, there’s
definitely progression and growth.”
Naysayers beware (I guess that includes us) because
Acrade Fire is helping the indie industry pull a hat
trick. The bands new album Neon Bible debuted at
number two this week – just behind Notorious B.I.G.’s
Greatest Hits compilation. The follow up to
2004’s Funeral sold just around 92,000 copies while
the dead guy Biggie Smalls sold close to 99,000.
2007 is proving to be a banner year for the indie
divisions of labels as Arcade Fire follows Sub Pop’s
Shins release of Wincing The Night Away which also
debuted at number two.
For a full review of Arcade Fire’s Neon Bible, check

The Oxford quartet Goldrush is ready to take on
America with their upcoming release, The Heart Is
The Place, on April 10th care of Better Looking
Records. And what better stage to get the chatter
going about the English act than at SXSW?
Rhetorical, right? After that, the band will be
coastal drumming up support for their US debut.
Check out our mp3 of their first single ‘Heaven’s My
Destination’ – a string sweeping electronica
influenced ballad. The beat background is in no
doubt influenced by producer James Rutledge of
DangerMouse fame. While their 2002 effort was much
more safe – Heart promises to be much more diverse
and risky. Check back in a few weeks for the full
review.

Arctic Monkeys are readying their new release
Favourite Worst Nightmare but it looks like the
boys have been thinking dark in the off season.
Hence, we present you with the first single
‘Brainstorm’ off the album. The video even goes dark
and poppy at the same time – think if Trent Reznor
and Oasis mated – this video would be their
offspring.
We continue to wait for the true
magic to start at SXSW - which for us is the
music of course - but our geeked out side can't
help but pull us to the likes of Bruce Sterling.
But it was his crazy speed retoric that caught
our attention with words like 'I like Rumsfeld,
I dig his poetry.'
Renegade artist Morrissey may have a better left
wing audience in the states as he tries to push his
civil rights movement for animals onto anyone who
will listen to him past the first sentence. For
those of us who prefer the ‘Sing Your Life’ version
of the ex-Smith, we can take solace in the fact that
the artist will be touring the US. Just don’t wear
fur to the show, love.

We have officially burned thru a half dozen
copies of You Could Have It So Much Better.
So we were ecstatic to hear that Franz Ferdinand are
currently underway with their follow-up to the 2005
masterpiece of Brit-punk. But nothing comes without
a sorrowful price. The band has confirmed that their
Bonaroo appearance this summer in Tennessee will be
the acts sole show as they’d rather focus on new
material than regurgitate the old. No window date
has been set for the release but a good estimate
will be fall of ’07. We’ll keep you posted.
Often times feared as a musical cult, the sheet
wearing troupe of dozens The Polyphonic Spree have
reportedly found a label for their new album The
Fragile Army. TVT signed the record for a June
release. It’s been three long years since the band
has released a full length album but did dabble with
an iTunes only EP, Wait. The band recorded
the tracks in Minnesota, and Texas while some music
was captured in Chicago as well.

No you can’t ask Ramble John “RJ” Krohn better
known as RJD2 about marital advice. You could, but
it may not make much more sense than his often times
hypnotic hooks and beats. But the artist, producer,
and all around bad ass musician is opening up a
column just for his fans. To coincide with the
recent release of his album The Third Hand, RJD2
will answer your burning questions about his works
and place in the music industry. But this is a
forward thinking artist here – so you’re going to
have to think tech-like by submitting your questions
via video and uploading them to YouTube. That’s
right – it’s a face-to-face deal. Just add the tag
‘askrjd2’ to your upload and thanks to the miracle
of the internet, your question will be posted on
askrjd2.com. Check by regularly to the site for
RJD2’s surely inspirational answer.

And here we thought animal crackers would be the
most obvious placement. Guess it goes to prove that
the boardroom execs of Crayola know a better place
for indie band Animal Collective to shine their
music on the next generation of listeners. Crayola’s
new commercial spot for their Color Explosion pen
series features ‘Sweet Road’ from Animal Collectives
release Sun Tongs. Maybe it goes to prove that kids
know more about music than just patty-cake while
you, my fiend… patty cake is all you want to play.

Sure there ain't music to be had yet but that
doesn't stop us from multiple tequila shots and
tacos. Nor does it stop us while at SXSW from

highlights and will be doing so all week long.

forefront of rock. On the eve of their SXSW
appearance, the band will then head to New York for

the next month. But what about their album?
As previously reported, the band is also in the
studio working on their new album which sources are
reporting to be over half complete with a late 2007
window for release. Of course, if you don’t have a
passport, you can catch the latest and greatest
offerings from the band via download of their

Can the sophistication of the South handle the
‘velvet glove and brass knuckles’ of Swede act The
Hives? Well, they are going to have to. The punk
act-gone-garage rock are planning on laying down
their follow up to 2004’s Tyrannosaurus Hives
in the great state of Mississippi. The break is
nothing new to the band as they often time takes
upwards of 3 years in between albums – each time
changing up their sound a bit more toward rock and
away from their seedy punk pasts. No word yet on the
intended release date but we’d be smart to assume
this time next year. In the meantime, you can catch
The Hives one of two ways: On the road if you are
overseas in Germany or on a new compilation album.
The band has put some time in on producer
Timbaland’s upcoming Timbaland Presents: Shock
Value – a compilation of sorts of rock/pop/and
hip hop acts.

It’s been one hell of a kickstart to 2007 for
Northwest label Sub Pop. Their non-proverbial stock
shot up to household name almost with the surprise
success of The Shins release Wincing The Night Away
that saw a #2 premier on Billboard’s music chart.
When you got a wave, you ride it and that’s just
what Sub Pop found Jonathan Poneman is going to do.
Label hard-hands will be whipping the new-fangled
division – one that will surely be a very-very indie
sector – into profitability and gratitude.
Their first project? A small Seattle act called
Arthur & Yu and their debut effort In Camera
will release their album June 19th. For more info on
the band including their sound, you can check out
their myspace link below. The duo of Grant Olsen and
Sonya Westcott admit that In Camera is a story of
growing up and letting go – a sort of coming of age
that also surrounds itself in churning melodies and
striking guitars.

I guess Decemberists guitarist Chris Funk wasn’t
kidding when he said the band was planning on
playing with the LA Philharmonic Orchestra someday.
The band is will play with the esteemed ensemble in
July at the Hollywood Bowl. We don’t know about you,
but chills of crippling proportions shoot up our
backs when we think of Colin Meloy’s dialogue backed
by one of the most well accomplished musical casts.
The band is also ready to announce their Spring Tour
titled ‘Twilight in the Fearful Forrest Tour 2007’.
Whoa. ‘Tour’ just doesn’t cut it these days. Only
the Decemberists could sex up the title of tour with
a chapter title from a lost J.R.R. Tolkien scribe.
The bands travels will involve an East to West romp
that will see them off in New Jersey, a stop in
festivals like Coachella and Bonnaroo, two nights in
Chicago’s Riviera Theatre and an encore in Portland.
The band will bring up and coming artist Brightest
Diamond along for majority of shows.
And if you can’t make it out of your house, The
Decemberists are brining the tour life to your tube.
A Practical Handbook is a handy DVD that will
feature interviews, live performances and videos
from the band and their latest effort, The Crane
Wife. The DVD will hit stores everywhere on
March 20th.

The folks over at Fanatic are throwing down in a
crazy way for this year’s SXSW. The promotion group
that had an ear for past musicians-gone-high-road
like Sufjan Stevens, My Morning Jacket and more are
trying for the repeat with this years list of
hopefuls. Included on their SXSW bill is office
favorite Thomas Lunch, Metermaids, UK group
65daysofstatic, and the Berg Sans Nipple. We even

simpletons. The symbol route? Pffft – trite! Only
bands with cahoonas can name themselves that of a
punctuation and still rock this good. !!! is doing
just that. Hot off the release of their latest
Myth Takes, the band is heading to the US in May
starting with an appearance at this year’s Coachella
Festival. The band seems to forgo the majority of
the US this time around however by touring up the
West Coast – thru Canada – and landing in the East.
Here’s hoping we get some more dates soon.

Norwigian born Kate Havnevik is mega misleading.
Her cute façade only masks her insane trip-hop and electronica background. Her name may not seem
familiar but you’ve already run into one of her
tracks on Grey’s Anatomy called ‘Grace’. Or maybe
the track ‘Strangelove’ off of West Wing. Not yet?
She also co-wrote and even provided vocals for ‘Only
This Moment’ off of Royksopp’s slick 2006 effort The
Understanding. She’s also been featured on The OC.
As you can tell – you’ve surly run into her but just
didn’t know better. She’s out to change that now.
Kate will be touring with Air after he stint at SXSW
this spring. You can also check out her song ‘Unlike
Me’ which was also featured on Grey’s Anatomy. Six
