We’ve been watching the quiet uprising of
Lavender Diamond for the past year now thru shows
and some singles that sneak into our office from
time to time from the band. Finally, John and Jane Q
Public are going to know what we’ve been raving
about. May 8th will see the band’s debut release of
Imagine Our Love from Matador Records. Think part Carpenters
but with a nice shot of updated folk-pop based off
of punk roots and you get the feeling that Becky
Stark and company are going to be more than just a
one-trick pony.
You can also catch the band on the road in May and
June as they play in select venues coast-to-coast.

Ruby Isle ‘Teenage Riot’
Last week we brought you the mp3 of Ruby Isle’s
electronica re-tooled Sonic Youth version of
‘Teenage Riot’. Now we have the video of the video
for you to see for yourself the beautiful oddity
that is Ruby Isle. Damn catchy. But the video is a
bit disturbing in that creepy kind-of-way.
Gearing up for their debut album, The Graduates have
announced a huge nationwide tour spanning three
months as the band slow-pokes across the States in
support of Anhedonia starting this Friday.
The album, due out April 10th on Icon Mes records.
If you spy on the college radio scene (and who
doesn’t when we have to listen to John Melloncamp
all day – damn you Clear Channel!) you may already
be familiar with the bands stellar 2005 EP The
Horror Show that garnered them a strong following.
But if you are stuck in Indiana radio, then I’ll
enlighten you. The Graduates are a Springfield, IL
quintet of amazingly mature power pop-rock that. And
in a welcome f-you to the music scene – the albums
title references a ‘lack of emotion’; something that
proves the band is happy with just existing and
playing in the moment. Expect this group to blow up
over the summer and into the fall. But proof is in
the pudding and we would leave you without some
Jello. Check out ‘Sit and Sink’ off the new album
below.

It’s always funny how the music industry
sometimes takes so long to grab a hold of the
underground music scene – even when its blowing up
on the radar. Case in point: Latin music fusion with
classic Motown grooves have been fueling clubs for
the past half decade. But now Motown is taking note
and releasing Motown Remixed Volume 2 – a
compilation/remix of sorts that takes some of the
classic Motown hits and injects them with latin
influenced house beats with hotter results than one
may expect. Of course, the supporting cast to do so
is no slouch. Up and coming mix masters like DJ Afro
(who produces slick Venezuelan synth pop act Los
Amigos Invisibles) and Kid Kumbia (a.k.a. David
Elizondo) are taking the honors or forming a redux
of classics by The Temptations and Jackson 5 just to
name a few. Even the Smokey Robinson classic ‘Being
With You’ makes a rare appearance with the original
Spanish lyrics sung by Robinson himself.
Track Listing:
01 Jr. Walker and the Alls Stars / Los Amigos
Invisibles - ‘Shotgun’
02 The Temptations / Kid Kumbia – ‘Papa Was A
Rollin’ Stone’ / ‘(Love Is Like A) Heat Wave’
03 Jackson 5 / SPK Mix - ‘I Want You Back’
04 Diana Ross / Chosen Few Mix - ‘The Boss’
05 Jackson 5 / Miami Mix - ‘Dancing Machine’
06 The Temptations / Cantor Mix - ‘I Can't Get
Next To You’
07 Marvin Gaye / Levin Mix - ‘Heard It
Through The Grapevine’
08 Teena Marie / Sonidero Nacional Remix – ‘Square
Biz’
09 Edwards and Garrett / Uflow Mix
– ‘Don't Look Any Further’
10 Smokey Robinson / Rivera Mix – ‘Aqui
Con Tigo (Being With You)’
Hooky pop is as cliché these days for music as a
member of the presidential cabinet falling under
indictment. So, to classify Machines Go Boom as such
would result in insta-stoning in our books buts its
hard to deny the homebrew pop that frontman Mickey
Machine and company put together. Their newest
effort, Music For Parents may be misleading
in title but rest assured that the youthful indie
flavor is mixed in with every harmony the five-piece
act puts together. Check out two choice tracks off
their new album below.

Out of the band Irvings ashes fired out Alex
Church’s new creation in Sea Wolf. The pop
brilliance that once was from the pop heat of Los
Angeles is now reinvented on the upcoming EP Get To
The River Before It Runs Too Low. The five song
effort hits the shelves on May 8th from Dangerbird
Records. Check out the track ‘You Are Wolf’ below.
To help confuse the masses who have too many recent
albums with the name Wolf in them, Sea Wolf will be

Rumors have surfaced that spring has come about
and the boys of summer that force us into the
Cracker Jack stands to hear the crack of the bats is
upon us. But since we are usually chained to our
desks, we hadn’t noticed. So, to take part in the
festivities, we will be visiting the world outside
our offices and possibly get some color to our
winter paste. We’ll be back on Tuesday April 10th
rejuvenated and exercised from nagging memories of
the Kaiser Chiefs newest effort of feudal rock.
Cheers!
Is it a sign that music is just so good these
days from under-the-radar acts that the recent
resurgence of festivals is becoming increasingly
claustrophobic to music-philes like us? Or is it
just a testament of money grubbing organizations
hell bent on selling you worthless Zunes in
sponsored tents? Either way, you win (except
for owning a Zune - sorry for ya.) On the growing
list of festivals for 2007 with the likes of
Sasquatch!, Coachella, and Lollapalooza crowding the
spotlight, now you can add another round of
Bumbershoot. The self proclaimed music and arts
festival will be held in Washington once again.
The long-running fest will have another take at the
three day music marathon when they host the likes of
The Shins, Lupe Fiasco, and more on September
1-3. Not to be outdone by other summer events,
Bumbershoot also adds a cultural aspect to expand
your mind including comedy, movies, and literature
events.
Early bird three day passes have already sold out
but there are still second round 3 day discounted
passes for sale at the event website [www.bumbershoot.org]
for $75. Both Gold 3-Day ($195 air conditioned
lounge, posters, beer coupons) and Platinum 3-Day
($395 - just more of the Gold love) passes are also
on sale. Expect the list of performers to grow
as the dates near.

In the spirit of the Kevin Bacon game – we dare
you to go from Norwegian death metal to French club
anthems in six degrees. The long way would be from
Block Party to Paul Epworth to Maralyn Manson to
Alan Moulder. Or for the abridged version: Black
Strobe. Producer and re-mixer extraordinaire Paul
Epworth (who guided such influential UK sounds like
The Futureheads and Bloc Party) and British rock
visionary Alan Moulder (U2, My Bloody Valentine,
NIN) have teamed up behind the glass to bring you
the dark electronica guitar fused effort Burn
Your Own Church from the four piece outfit Black
Strobe. The album, due out June 5th from Playlouder
Records, is a grand example of the duos combined
influences on the music scene for the past two
decades. Mood fueled songs like ‘Shining Bright
Star’ is the best reverb notes and bass heavy effort
Trent Reznor never wrote. Vocalist Arnaud Rebotini
explained it to the letter when he said:
“I think we’re quite close to Klaxons in terms of
production, although maybe we are a little bit
darker because of the low voice and the different
influences. But we have the same mood, the same mix
of synths and guitars.”
And dare we predict the riotous 'Blood Shot Eyes'
is easily one of the best club fueled efforts in
years and one you may hear throughout the summer
while twirling your glow sticks?

Videos cost too damn much apparently for most
indie acts these days. Either they go crazy cheap
(read: Beck) or throw down like an intoxicated
Donald Trump producing a Beyonce video. Bloc Party
believes in letting the fans do the work for them.
Case-in-point: the band is running a contest for you
to create a video for their next single ‘I Still

April 9th. If you can stomach the song, you have a

Feist somehow finds time to sleep, we're just not
sure when or how. The workhorse vixen has just
released three new webisode/videos for her upcoming
album The Reminder. Even though the new long

The dance driven 'Sealion', Imogen Heap sounding 'My

Canadian rock is becoming more common than a
celeb panty-less citing. One result of the prior
(you don’t need the later, do you?) is the rock
outfit The Weakerthans and their power pop. The band
has been quiet since their 2003 release
Reconstruction Site but it looks like they are
back in the studio to hash out five years worth of
new material. The as of yet untitled album is
penciled in for a Fall release. Those who are
unfamiliar with the Winnipeg group should do
themselves a favor and pick up their punk alt rock
manifest Reconstruction Site. Ian Blurton (of Saigon
Hookers and Tricky Woo fame) is reportedly behind
the project once again. When Asked, lead guitarist
Stephen Carroll of the band had this to say of the
new recordings:
"This record is looking a little less
conceptual and more like a collection of songs
and stories. Having brought Ian in to help
complete the record has been great. As we had
been staring at most of the songs for so long
that it was hard for us to see their potential.
Since we decided to record the album we have
gained a lot of momentum and the fragmented
parts are really coming together well. And we
are all very excited about the record.";
We’ll keep you posted on track info and the first
hints of a new song when we get it.
All this babbling and your wonder what our point is;
the band has new material. That’s right. The
do-gooders of rock ‘n roll are at it again.
According to You Ain’t No Picasso, the band
previewed new material at their Seattle show. The
three songs ‘Bed’s Exploding, ‘Cathedral Bells’, and
‘Things I Don’t Know’ were all shown off. Of course,
our same beaker of scientists have no explanation of
whether a new album is in the works or if they guys
are just simply farting around. Our guess? New stuff
in your hands by Fall. We’ll keep you posted.

York. The show, originally recorded March 12th of
this year, was the first US appearance by the band.

Armand Van Helden is ready to take you back to a
time before dance became a commercialized self
deprecating house buzz word. I just keep thinking of
that line from Singles. “You’re the only guy I ever
knew to mix Public Enemy with Elvis Costello.” But
that’s just want Helden is doing for his upcoming
release Ghettoblaster. Part throwback part
reinvention, Ghettoblaster will be a call to the old
days of Prince and Expose drum kits, a place where
you can’t even tell where it comes from but it
sounds damn good, and a sound that could drop kick
underground dance to the forefront again. The album
will hit stores on April 24th via Ultra Records.

Come on feel the apples. Apples in Stereo have
released their cardboard cutout festival ‘Can You
Feel It’ of robot oddity. But hey, the song is as
pop happy as a slice of – apple pie.
Apparently you can leave and eat your cake as well.
At least that’s what the boys of The Sea and Cake
are on to as they hit the road in May with The Zincs
to drum up support for their upcoming release
Everybody – due May 8th care of Thrill Jockey. The
trek includes a two show stint in Chicago.
You can stream the first song off their upcoming
album below titled ‘Crossing Line’

double bass. The album will hit shelves from

Ongiara – due in May. But to keep
our appetite more whet than a body of water, the
band has released a video for their first gorgeous
single ‘Backstage With The Modern Dancers’. The one
track Wes Anderson like shooting of the video is
equally complimentary to the string laden track.
Sure the bands name is eye-catchy but it’s really
a nuisance to hit the shift key that many times in
one word. UK based and adored iLiKETRAiNS are
forgoing cult status and starting to gain speed to
the general public as they travel their sound
overseas. Of course their fanbase, who has the
nickname RAiLCARD Holders, has done their part in
making the band a one-to-watch. But it’s truly the
unique and infectious sound that caught our ears at
this year’s SXSW Festival. Now the band is ready to
release a mini-album of sorts on April 24th called
Progress Reform. Think if Interpol made some heated
sex with the likes of The Smiths and got it all
video-taped thru the eyes of Syd Barrett and you
pretty much get the gist.
