With vision of Thurston Moore still in our head
from this years SXSW [see here], we plum forgot that
Sonic Youth was about to get the re-issue royal
treatment when the bands 1988 landmark Daydream
Nation comes out June 12th. One of the most under
rated but often sought after albums of the 80’s, Daydream Nation will be released on a deluxe two CD
set that will feature not only the original landmark
album but also a bonus disc of unreleased live
material and covers. The second disc will be
comprised of 15 live performances stretching across
the band’s Daydream Nation tour including CBGB’s in
New York and the Paradiso in Amsterdam. Atop all
this live love is some rare studio covers including
the Beatles ‘Within You Without You’, Neil Young’s
‘Computer Age’, Captain Beefheart’s ‘Electricity’,
and Mudhoney’s ‘Touch Me, I’m Sick’. A four LP
version is also reported.
In a festivus of debauchery, the band will be on the
road to celebrate the re-release of Daydream Nation
around the world over the summer. We’re told more
will follow but for now, here are the confirmed
dates in North America and Europe. It may also be to
commemorate the years with Geffen as reports have
surfaced the band is packing up shop and moving away
form the label they’ve called home for twenty years.

Our parents had it simple: slap on some polmade
to slick back the hair and a plain white t-shirt to
look cool. Children of today have to spend $40 on a
vintage tee and are suckered into shag carpeting.
The culprit of such is in part Urban Outfitters. But
they are looking to make amends with draining our
wallets and instead giving back to indie radio
stations around the country that their shoppers
listen to. Urban Outfitters along with car
manufacturer Toyota are working together on the Free
YR Radio Tour. The tour is a series of free in store
performances starting April 15th around the country
featuring such hot acts like Klxons, The Ponys,
Tapes ‘N Tapes, Dinosaur Jr, and more. Some bands
have yet to be announced for the later dates but
we’ll keep you posted.
Each performance will be co-presented by a local
indie radio station (non-commercial based) to help
benefit the campaign. Toyota will award a listener
at each location with a Yaris. Said stations will
also receive proceeds from the Free YR Radio
compilation album in the works to be released at the
end of the year-long program.

Nothing is ever straight forward in the world of
The Shins. And new the new video for the car/spy
salesman thriller ‘Australia’ proves our point. As
if their stellar sales for their newest release
Wincing The Night Away couldn’t afford enough
balloons to raise the dead, these guys gotta go
steal some from the salt of the earl: car salesmen.
Check it out.
Going to Germany for Octoberfest is one thing.
Going to Germany for the World Cup was in itself a
pinical event. But if you are Electrelane, it was
the muse for their upcoming new album No Shouts, No
Calls – due out May 8th care of Too Pure. The all
female quartet worked over the summer on the follow
up to 2004’s The Power Out to reinvent their slick

…sort of. First off, lets just be happy that Pete
Doherty is making headlines for doing something for
the fans – not at them or shooting up in a dark
seedy dilapidated house in the sticks. No, not this
time. Fans of the Libertines and rehab rejoice. NME
is reporting that Doherty while performing his two
night gig: Doherty’s An Evening With Pete Doherty,
had a visit on the second set from former Libertines
band mate Carl Barat. The duo played some thirteen
songs from the bands old cataloge. Check out the fan
made video of the hug-fest.
Both Doherty and Barat severed ties from their
former band The Libertines over a year ago and
formed separate entities; Babyshambles and Dirty
Pretty Things respectively. It had been reported
that despite the tabloids and the distaste when the
band broke up, both remained friends.
A Texan in Brooklyn may sound like a sitcom for the
WB but it’s the real life story for musician Paul
Duncan. So it was second nature when he rocked out
at this year’s SXSW in his backyard. Back in
Brooklyn, the synth/guitar fusion maestro is putting
the final touches on his third full length album
Above the Trees which reportedly takes the artist
down a more pop-driven path. The album was crafted
in less than a week in the Chicago studio with the
aid of Grizzly Bear’s Christopher Bear and an
ensemble of others. Take a listen to ‘The Lake, Pt.
2’ off of his upcoming album Above the Trees due out
on May 1st.
They don’t want revenge but they aren’t coming
over for a night cap. Mood rockers Interpol are
extending their summer stint overseas but still snub
stateside audiences. The outfit has reportedly been
working on new material but have yet to confirm
anything fleshed out in the studio to follow up
their 2004 well received effort, Antics. A few EP’s
do not a happy crowd make.

Impressing the rabid fans of today’s music seems
harder than we even know for ourselves – said folk
being us of course. And no one knows this better
than The Shaky Hands who show appreciation for their
one true bandade who gets the crowd going in their
new video for the song ‘Why & How Come’. Of course,
they are also sticking it to the indie fans who
won’t stop texting during a show and the smoke
filled auditoriums they are forced to play. Short
and funny.
Prefix is reporting that Rage Against the Machine
lead Zach de la Rocha and band mate Tom Morello will
be playing a one off in Chicago. The band mates, who
recently made headlines by reuniting Rage Against
the Machine, are playing at a workers rally
scheduled for April 14th at the Federal Plaza. The
band will be there in support of the Coalition of
Immokalee Workers For Truth. Always the activist for
political rants, Zach de la Rocha is well known for
supporting workers rights in North America.
Brit Boduf Songs (also known as Matt Sweet) have
released the first video for the debut album. Going
along with the four track recording the artist
admits to using in his home, the Tim Burton of
yesteryear video ‘27th Raven’s Head’ is as creepy as
it is weird.
Rock journal turned indie focused page turner
Rolling Stone are reporting that M.I.A. much
anticipated second album will be called Kala. They
also dropped the goods that the album will be
released on June 26th care of Interscope Records. As
previously reported M.I.A. has been working with
hubby Diplo and the
you-can't-escape-my-grasp-on-all-things-urban-Timbaland
on the new effort for some time now.
Those looking for her this summer may find that
her name suits her touring schedule. M.I.A. will
only make a brief appearance at two large festivals
- Washington's Sasquatch! Festival and Toronto's
Virgin Festival.
And since its video day at Pensatos we thought
we'd continue the visual stimulation with 'Bird Flu'
off the upcoming album. I spell M.I.A. H-O-T, even
if she is wearing a Captain Merrill Stubing cap and
making nice with a lamb. Yes, that was a
Love Boat reference - the hat, hopefully not the
lamb.
Bjork is driving down a darker electronic path this
year with Timbaland in the driver seat. Case in
point is the new video for the politico charged 'We
Are Earth Intruders' off her upcoming release Volta.
Now, viewer beware: this isn't a video as much as it
is a still of oddity. But what is key here is the
Latin influenced sound and turn that Bjork is
taking. Compile this with knowledge that she is
working with other indie folk like Antony & The
Johnsons and you know this is going to be one
interesting and hard-to-file-under album from the
diva.
In a family of nine, you are bound to get
confused by all your surrounding influences. Annie
Clark, known as St. Vincent in the music realm, may
not be the charitable saint of which she takes the
name of on stage, but her sways from her Jewish,
Catholic, Unitarian family have aided in creating a
wildling enjoyable form of cinematic pop that has
hints of Coltrane jazz at times, aforementioned
blues layers and Southern folk; as original as it is
cosmopolitan in production. Of course, we wouldn't
leave you with the hype without the delivery. Check
out the pop-infused single 'Now, Now' below. If you
were to squint while listening, you'd thought you
were hearing Sufjan Stevens reincarnated as an
Oklahoma goddess. The song comes from her Beaggars
Banquet debut Marry Me due out July 10th.
You can also catch her live into May as she travels
assorted venues. She'll be joined on the road with
John Vanderslice including an appearance at
Sasquatch! Festival in Washington to commence the
tour. See the dates below - now, now.

Screw guns, these funk bastards have lasers! The
Diplo produced Bonde do Role troupe have released
their South American fueled single 'Solta O Frango'
off their upcoming album With Lasers due out on June
5th. iTune crazy folk can download the album now.
The video for the single will immerse you - said
listener and procurer of all things indie - in the
middle of a human sized cock fight complete with a
Shuffle Truffle of a fat man and some back alley
betting. Yes, it's as odd as it reads. And yes, that
is a Goonies reference you booby-twap
bastard.
A mid summer tour is always suspect but
appreciated - especially when a band doesn't have a
new album to support. But this is Architecture in
Helsinki we're talking about here. New is in the eye
of the beholder and they don't need no friggin'
album. They've got singles. Remix singles to be
exact. Over the course of the hot months, Helsinki
will be releasing some slick remixes from the minds
of Dr. Dog, YACHT, A-Trak, Hey Willpower!, DJ
Rapture and more. First off will be the hyper take
on the bands song 'Heart It Races' remixed by DJ/Raputre
and features Lee G. The remaining tracks are to
trickle out for the remainder of the summer.

Beggars newest soon-to-be-adored by the masses
group Blonde Redhead has released a video for the
single '23'. The title track song is an art student
study on lens flare and mirror parlor tricks. But
its our belief that all videos should be a backseat
to the song - and '23' is just that in both cases. A
hauntingly beautiful song that should be in your
rotation regardless. The full album hits stores this
week. Check back for our review shortly. You can
also download the mp3 of the song below. The group
is launching their North American tour for the album

After gaining much ballyhooed praise for their
2006 effort Silent Shout, the Swedish duo The
Knife are ready to go box set to give their fans
something to cry over. And by the size of it, the
upcoming 3-disc set - aptly titled Silent Shout
Deluxe Edition will take hours to carve apart.
The May 8th release will feature the entire Silent
Shout album, the DVD 'Silent Shout: An Audiovisual
Experience, animated shorts and previously
unreleased live cuts from the same DVD performance.
The release was originally rumored for April but was
pushed back for unknown reasons. What do we think?
To describe The Knife is difficult - as they are
a freakishly derived electropop experience that
deserves to be seen live before you judge the album
as a whole. Confused? We were too at first but
Silent Shout grew on us and while we don't agree
with the hoity-toity Pitchfork folks in saying this
is the best of 2006, we do think its worth a spin
and addition to your collection. And now you can get
the kick-ass version.
