Sure you think summer is all about the festivals
– and rightfully so. But there is a large event
taking place called Live Earth that will trump most
of these events, if not for its lineup, then its
cause. Live Earth is a seven continent concert that
will feature bands from around the world over a
twenty four hour period to help raise money and
awareness for global climate conditions. The London
portion has been confirmed to be held at Webley
Stadium hosting seventeen acts in the time period
including the likes of Bloc Party, David Gray,
Damien Rice, and Beastie Boys. Live Earth founder
and executive producer Kevin Wall had this to say:
“This monster lineup will ensure Live Earth meets
our goal of brining together people from around the
world to combat the climate crisis.”
Well said, if not a bit robotic. The event will take
place on a Jack White approved triple number date
July 7th (07/07/07). A c-note has been placed that
Bloc Party will perform ‘Price of Gas’. If we lose,
we’ll donate it to the cause.
Below is the line-up of the band that will be
performing on stage in London.
Live Earth London Line-up:
Beastie Boys
Black Eyed Peas
Bloc Party
Corinne Bailey Rae
Damien Rice
David Gray
Duran Duran
Foo Fighters
Genesis
James Blunt
John Legend
Keane
Madonna
Paolo Nutini
Razorlight
Red Hot Chili Peppers

Something about the Woody Allen white suite (ala
Everything You Wanted To Know About Sex*) on a
skateboard is hypnotically humorous to watch. Of
course, watching people wonder what the hell is
going on is possibly funnier. And thus is Coconut
Records latest video for the song ‘West Coast’. The
band was also recently featured on the Spider-Man 3
soundtrack. That’s our review tie-in. Boo-yah!
Ahhh the plans to release songs on a well timed
moment that fans will eat up. But the true fans
already know the songs because the bought said
album, right? Well, they’re not for you silly.
They’re for the kids who still watch MTV Cribs and
have ‘Holla Back, Girl’ in heavy rotation at home
still in order to discover new music. And so the
formula continues with Arcade Fire as they are not
only on the cusp of releasing the single ‘Keep The
Car Running’ on May 8th but are already planning
their next move on July 10th when they drop the 7”
single of Intervention. Hey, did you know they were
touring? I don’t think we’ve posted anything about a
tour on here…

We can’t help but think Borat every time we see
something come across our newswire about the
twenty-three piece act I’m From Barcelona. Number
one band of prostitutes in Kazakhstan? Not quite but
the group seems to be numero uno on many radars as
of late. Easily understood, what with their
annoyingly cute file-under-Boy-Least-Likely-To-sound
and so catchy-it-hurts refrains. But you’re gonna
need your passports to get a glimpse of the act
outside of this years Lollapalooza in Chicago and
McCarren in Brooklyn since the band will be touring
overseas for the summer. Check out the track ‘We’re
From Barcelona’ from the bands long-player Let Me
Introduce My Friends. Niiiiiiiice.

Becky Stark and her silly birds. Lavender Diamond is
about to break musical wind with their upcoming
release of Imagine Our Love [track info and album
details on link below] next week. But the folks over
at Spinner have the goods on the albums first
video
for ‘Open Your Heart’ – yet another dance troupe
number ala Feist and OK Go (of sorts) complete with
an awkward rollerskating sequence and creepy
suburbia piano playing in the street. Still, the
video, much like Becky and her music is as sweet as
confectionery sugar pop. Click the link below for
the video.
In a new posting today from the Karen-O driven Yeah
Yeah Yeahs, the band hints (briefly) at a new EP. In
a paragraph describing two free shows the band plans
to play in Brooklyn, New York, the band utters the
words ‘new EP’ and as soon as they say it move on to
more details about the show. Of course, the band is
reportedly filming the live event that will only
house 250 attendees. The post requested more women
than guys to come out as they would be ‘lusted’
over. The second show is for girls only as well.
This coupled with the bands recent release of the
song ‘Sealings’ for the Spider-Man 3 soundtrack and
suddenly punk is back in the mainstream again.
O-Karen.

Get your maple leaf gear ready and your raunchy
dialect in tact because you’re heading to Calgary
this summer. ‘The hell you say’ is probably the
first set of words exiting your inner monologue
right now. But give the beach a break for this trip.
The Calgary Sled Island Festival has been announced
and the likes of Cat Power, The Dears, Spoon, The
Walkmen, Mates of State as well as tons of others
will be jamming to the masses from June 27th to the
29th. The event, still in its infant stages of dates
and details, is composed by art curator for Pop
Montreal International Music Festival Shawn Petsche.
He has headed the Montreal event for the past three
years. Unlike other festivals this summer like
Sasquatch! and Lollapalooza, Sled not be hosted at
one site but instead take the SXSW approach and use
several venues including the Knox United and Grace
Presbyterian churches along with the Mac Hall
Ballroom.
The four day fest will go for $180 per attendee. To
purchase tickets, head on over to the site:

Nothing gives you a bigger head than the flattery of
remix and an invitation from pop superstars to tour
with them. So, it’s no surprise that the case of CSS
have a slight case of gigantism. The Brazilian based
six-tet will be touring with the likes of Gwen
Stefani for some select shows in the UK and Ireland.
If that wasn’t enough love for the band to start
writing home about, Hot Chip have confirmed that
they are in fact remixing the romantic song ‘Let’s
Make Love and Listen To Death From Above’ for a
single release in the UK on May 14th followed by the
US on July 10th. Best yet, for you vinyl junkies,
the single will be released on 12” only. Simian
Mobile Disco and Calvin Harris are also on board for
the remixes.

And let the household band of the summer stand
forth. In more Smashing Pumpkins news (catch up
below … because you’re gonna hear a lot about them
over the summer), the re-united band on the verge of
their much anticipated release Zeitgeist, has been
donned the honors of tribute album by the MySpace
Label. The site/label is putting out a tribute album
from some of today’s indie/mainstream acts – a ‘we
love this song’ affair if you will. Included on the
list are the likes of The Bravery, Ben Kweller, and
the Deftones playing their favorite Pumpkins tunes.
According to the kids over at Stereogum, we are able
to confirm the following track list. The album is
scheduled for release in a packaged edition of
July’s Spin Magazine. But if you want swing by each
band’s MySpace site on May 14th, you can stream each
individual song till your hearts content.
Of course what we don’t know is how Billy feels
about all this. We get the sneaking suspicion some
of these bands would get the shit kicked out of them
in a dark alley by Corgan exiting a bar on any given
day – twice on Sunday.
Track Listing:
Panic! at the Disco – ‘Tonight, Tonight’
(+44) – ‘I Am One’
The Academy Is … - ‘Mayonaise’
Deftones – ‘Siva’
30 Seconds to Mars - (track TBD)
The Bravery: ‘Rocket’
Young Love – ‘1979’
The New Amsterdams – ‘Thirty-Three’
Test Your Reflex – ‘Ava Adore’
Ben Kweller – ‘Today’
Hawthorne Heights – ‘Bullet With Butterfly Wings’
Gliss – ‘Rhinoceros’
US fans of infections overseas rock are about to
reap the rewards sewn by newcomers The Basement.
Their upcoming stateside release of Illicit Hugs and
Playground Thugs has been a long time coming; the
imports been available for some time now, but wait
until you hear the crimanlly good ‘I Just Caught A
Face’ (download below) and you’ll realize it was
worth the wait. The album was in good hands; as
producer and fellow Irishman Mike Crossey (Arctic
Monkeys, The Zutons) saw to push the bands sound
even tighter. The album is scheduled for release May
8th. You can catch the band as they wrap up their
tour here at the select venues listed below.

The no frills performance of Modest Mouse on Late
Night with David Letterman on Wednesday begs for
more Paul interference with his shiny noggin and
stupid words of (or lack there-of) wisdom. The band
performed ‘Dashboard’ like seasoned vets.
As the joke goes, ‘you can’t stop a woman from
shop’n.’ And it looks like you can’t stop Albert
Hammond Jr. from touring. After just finishing a
four month tour that saw him with the likes of Bloc
Part and Incubus, Hammond and his bandmates are
going back out to do it all over again. Still
pushing their recent release of Yours To Keep, the
band will also appear on The Late Late Show with
Craig Fergusun on May 23rd. I guess this explains
why Hammond always looks so damn dozed in all his
photos. Check out our review of the album below as
well.

The boy wonders of the UK, Arctic Monkeys,
appeared on Conan O’Brien’s late night fiesta to
perform ‘Brainstorm’ off their much loved (at least
in our office) Favorite Worst Nightmare. If you can
handle the stretched video and more zooms than a
cheap porn, you’re in for a solid live performance.
Everybody stretch!
So you still weren’t sold on the Beastie Boys
2006 effort The 5 Boroughs, right? Of course,
after Hello Nasty, it’s understandable –
especially when the guys make you wait for the
greater part of a decade in between albums these
days. Well, according to a recent chat over at
Pitchfork, the Brooklyn B-Boys are looking to speed
up the rate of which they put out new albums. Case
in point: the June 26th release of The Mix Up.
Before you get giddy like a school girl, this isn’t
your typical Beastie Boys affair. The Mix Up
will be all instrumental – no vocals. And according
to the band it will also be a throw back in part to
their punk roots – ala Some Old Bullshit. Hey, if we
can get a whole album of elevator music versions of
‘Gratitude’, call me Nancy because I’m excited.
The band also confirmed that another version of the
album will include vocal work from new and rising
artists but that would be at a later date – another
conversation.

Not quite on par with the famed walk-of-shame I
so love to witness in the early hours of the
morning, but Junior Boy’s latest video ‘In the
Morning’ will have to do. The video seemingly
follows a bunch of strangers as they stumble home
from the pubs. But we just don’t really get the
whole T-1000 liquid metal alloy part…
Hot off the heals of a killer Coachella
performance that rocked the fields after Red Hot

trance God himself Tiësto is ready to repeat across
the US. We say ‘God’ because, seriously, how many
DJs do you know that get the honor to play the
opening ceremony of The Olympic Games? Don’t believe
in sports? Well how about the fact that he’s been
voted the worlds best DJ by DJ Magazine – three

Really, we don’t just report tour dates. It just

moody about it? Then go listen to Interpol. Hey, you
can also catch them on tour as they tackle … seven
locations? That’s right, the US gets hosed more so
than under our current dictator as synth-ridden
Interpol will briefly visit the land of the free in
late May and early June. They’ll be back in August
as well for Lollapalooza in Chicago.

Remember when the riot girl was created? I’m
talking before the powder-puff Gwen Stafani version.
Well, their Queen was Ani DiFranco and she’s back to
take the tour crown again in order to confuse the
female gender even further into kicking male
testicles. Yes, I said it. The Grammy award winning
artist will be spreading her politically and
personally charged messages once again across the
states in a small summer romp. Check out the dates

Folksters get your rock on. Tony Dekker and his
entourage of Iron & Wine double-takes – better known
as Great Lake Swimmers will be on the road to help
promote their upcoming album Ongiara. Fun
fact alert: the band released their digital box set
back in 2006 on a 512MB USB flash drive. This time
around, the album will be your standard pressings of
vinyl and CD but we can always hope for a pre-loaded
Zune, can’t we? I mean, aren’t they for sale on eBay
as book ends by now?
What was our point? Ongiara will be the bands
third studio album and saw the likes of Bob Egan of
Blue Rodeo, Sarah Harmer and Owen Pallet of Final
Fantasy and Arcade Fire (respectively) guest appear
in the studio. Don’t look too deep into the title of
the album though – it was taken off a ferry that
carried the band from Toronto Harbour last year. The
album is due out May 8th.

I guess if he were alive today, John Lennon would
want to save Darfur. Or, at least that’s what the
folks behind Instant Karma would have you
believe. The 21-track cover of John Lennon songs by
some of today’s best (and arguably forgettable) acts
is scheduled to arrive on June 12th from the folks
at Warner Brothers. On board for the project are
staples like Green Day, Jack Johnson, Aerosmith,
REM, U2. But what surprised us was that The Postal
Service and The Flaming Lips were to cover some
songs as well. Of course, when you see Big & Rich –
I just don’t think Karma is in your favor. Maybe we
should ask Carson Daily? All proceeds for the album
will go to Amnesty International and their campaign
to save Darfur.

There are more than spuds in Idaho and the rock
flavor Built to Spill is living proof. And while we
wait for some new material from the group, we’ll
have to make due with the ‘practice tour’. The band
has announced a small US romp in July that will see
them meet up with Chan-ch-Chan Marshall (a.k.a. Cat
Power) in Brooklyn as well. We call it a practice
tour because the band has also been rumored to be
working on the follow up to 2006’s sweet-sweet
You In Reverse but nothing’s been confirmed yet.
So, agree-to-disagree-ipso-facto you’ll likely hear
new material this summer. We’ll keep you posted.

Somewhere between Ani DiFranco’s soul and PJ
Harvey’s riotous ways falls Swati – a New York pedal
guitarist. Her soulful vocals and sweet sounding
string work (a twelve string affair etched to eight)
are causing quite the buzz out East. With the
upcoming release of Small Gods, due out this week,
she is sure to garner much needed attention. If you
are Atlantic bound, check her out as she climbs up
the coast. Also check out the video for her song ‘EPK’.

We’ve received some pretty odd notes from studios
and label management over the course of our run that
often times heed verification from said studio or
even artist. This is one of them. The Atlanta
Journal-Constitution is reporting that the Big Boi –
from Outkast fame, will be performing with the
Atlanta Ballet a year from now in April. The run
will include six performances and feature Big Boi
along with artists of Purple Ribbon Entertainment.
The Atlanta Ballet website had this to say of the
event:
“An adventuresome, exhilarating evening featuring
the world-renowned musical artistry of Big Boi of
Outkast as well as artists of Purple Ribbon
Entertainment. Daring, progressive, and soulful,
these very talented artists perform a stunning
collaborative piece, LIVE on stage with Atlanta
Ballet's exquisite dancers. Pure Innovation.”
Apparently Idlewilde got to the artist’s head. And
avoiding all obvious Zucker Brothers-like puns
(read: Nut Crackers), we truly don’t know much more
info on the event that is still a year out. We’ll
keep you posted as to whether or not this is a
Cabaret or something else.
So, two strangers are in the same taxi… no, this
isn’t a joke. Two strangers are in a taxi during the
New York City Transit strike of 2005 during rush
hour. Seriously, this isn’t a joke. So anyways,
these guys get to talking and find out they have a
lot in common; like the love for Stax Records, and
artists like Big Star and Harry Nillson. What
started as a chance meeting in the back seat of a
cab ended up with the bands first album, Maps and
Legends. So, I guess it’s befitting the band call
themselves Taxi Taxi. The sound? Pure pop that has
its roots deep in rock nostalgia. Check out the
choice tracks below.
Choice Sounds:
Taxi Taxi ‘Shoot The Dog, Chip The Tree’
Taxi Taxi ‘X Marks The Spot’
You won’t have to kick or push to get the details
on Lupe Fiasco’s follow up to his 2006 debut Food
and Liquor, he’s giving up the goods. According
to Billboard.com, the early info on the sophomore
effort by the young rapper, The Cool, is that
the album is slated for a fall release; potentially
Halloween time. He also mentions that he is working
with a big time super-secret rapper/producer. So,
being that Lupe is a Chi-town boy, our money is on
Kanye West. Care to double down?
