Smiths Guitarist with Modest Mouse

Oye! The Queen isn't dead! The Smiths legendary guitarist Johnny Marr is reportedly working with Modest Mouse on their upcoming release We Were Dead Before The Ship Even Sank. The band reports that Marr has not only helped on several tracks with his experienced guitar but also aided in penning many of the album's tracks. If that wasn't enough, Marr has also reportedly signed on with the band's tour to support the LP when it hits store shelves later this year.

In an interview with Rolling Stone, Modest Mouse frontman Isaac Bruce said this about the collaboration:

"I took a long shot really. I was like, 'You know, I really like that guy's guitar playing. There's no chance in hell he's going to say yes, but why not give him a call?' So I did.

"Eventually it all came together, and it was a really good fit, which I think actually surprised all of us."

Newcatle's Maximo Park is heading back to the studio to record the followup to last years well loved A Certain Trigger. The band is working with Gil Norton on the effort who's credits include the Foo Fighters (don't hold it against him) and the Pixies (hazah!)

The band will also be hitting the road next month with The Rolling Stones on their Norway and Denmark stretch. They went for Jagger's swagger but stayed for Smith's superiority.

Arthur 'First Black Hippie' Lee Dead at 61

One of the pioneers of guitar rock has passed.  Arthur Lee died yesterday [August 3rd] in his hometown of Memphis after years of battling Leukemia. The man who worked with the influential rock troupe Love was 61.

Acts like Led Zeppelin and Echo & The Bunnymen have cited Lee's influence in their music. Love's 1968 classic Forever Changes is often times seen as not only one of the most influential psychedelic rock albums of all time but is often included in critics all time list of music recordings.

Lee was notoriously headlined in the mid nineties for a brief scuff with the law after firing a pistol into the air without cause. He would spend the next 6 years in prison for the incident. But as unpredictable as he was off stage, his on stage antics will always be remembered as he self proclaimed himself 'the first black hippie.'

Free Streams of Lollapalooza

For some of us less fortunate souls this weekend, responsibilities like mortgages, car payments and food take precedence over Lollapalooza and it's hefty price tag this summer in Chicago.  Fortunate for our penny pinching selves, AT&T will be broadcasting Live at the festival their acts like The Shins, Kelley Stoltz, Iron and Wine, Sleater-Kinney and many more acts.

Just go to the AT&T Blue Room by clicking here and get ready for the cheap seats.  Now if you can just stop hacking your neighbors internet connection...

Kasabian's 'Monstrous Leap'

Not often enough do bands declare their music to be the coming of Christ and the opus to tower above all.  Thankfully, Kasabian guitarist Serge Pizzorno has not only give the press quotes to be dissected and followed up on when their new album Empire hits store shelves later this month, but he also has the balls to state the album will stand next to the British greats The Who, Rolling Stones, and ... Oasis?

In an interview with Uncut, Pizzorno commented on the progression of the bands latest effort and even compared their previous effort to "sketchy nonsense."

"I'm not going to hide the fact that I think it's absolutely fucking amazing. Noel Gallagher [of Oasis] came down to the studio and even he was surprised by what a monstrous leap we'd made.

"Oasis' Definitely Maybe was probably the last time a band captured that moment, a mood in British music. It's almost as if bands don't care about making that timeless classic. I really miss that."

Kasabian's Empire will hit UK stores on August 28th and later in the states on September 4th.

Happy Mondays' New Album

It's been a fifteen year wait for the band named after a New Order song to get back in the studio but it looks like Blue Monday is ready to forge ahead.  In the interim they troupe has entertained us with interviews and quotes from frontman Shaun Ryder like, "Just a group of lads who liked making music, and smoking lots of ganja, that's all. Something to do." The band landed legendary producer Howie B. who worked with the likes of DJ Shadow, Bjork, and U2. The as of yet untitled album still has one large hurdle to overcome as the band is still unsigned.

Sleater-Kinney Cancel D.C. Show

As if the torture of the band breaking up wasn't enough without blame, now we have mother nature to despise.  Sleater-Kinney has canceled their D.C. show that was scheduled for August 1st at the 9:30 Club due to a power outage and blown transformer. The problem was caused due to excessive energy used in the surrounding area notably due to the toxic heat as well. Spite me MN, spite me.

The concert has been rescheduled for Thursday August 3rd and will be broadcasted on NPR.org under their All Songs Considered mantra.

Radiohead to UK: Impeach Blair

I never understood the politico-music crossover.  It is part of the reason I don't read Rolling Stone often and a major reason why Bono must die. It should stay in song, and that's all.  Would you like Bush telling you his opinion on today's music? Here comes Thom Yorke from Radiohead pulling the strings of political outcry.  The singer posted on the bands website a call for Prime Minister Tony Blair's immediate resignation.

"I've had enough of this. Our government sitting on the fence with the US while World War 3 appears to be breaking out in Lebanon and Northern Israel. We must throw Tony Blair out of office NOW. He does not represent the views of British people. He does not represent the views of his foreign office and officials. He does not even represent the views of those in his cabinet. He cares too much about his relationship with Bush and Murdoch. This man is not fit to be our Prime Minister."

We'll see if his influence is great enough to overthrow the Man.

Jennifer O'Connor Matador Debut

File under: one to watch.  Jennifer O'Connor's upcoming Over the Mountain, Across the Valley and Back to the Stars will feature James McNew from Yo La Tengo and Kendall Meade on keyboards from Sparklehorse fame. O'Connor will have her first Matador effort hit stores on August 22nd. If you need more reason to check it out than the fabulous appearances littered on the album then I guess you can revel in hearing her personal issues as well:

"It's been so tumultuous, I think that inevitably crept into my songs. I wouldn't say that I always write from experience, but I did a lot of it on this record."

Gnarls Barkley Reschedule Lives

Success doesn't come without a price and Cee-Lo and Danger Mouse - better known as the duo Gnarls Barkley - know that more than most.  The incredible success of St. Elsewhere has prompted the two to literally reschedule their lives and projects they had in the works.

Cee-Lo was planning another Goodie Mob album and awaiting the release of an album with Jazze Pha off of Capitol Records (who also released St. Elsewhere).  But, that looks to stay on the backburner because Capitol, for unknown reasons, have yet to plan any release. The Goodie Mob reunion will also take some time due to the duo's expanding tour schedule.

Danger Mouse also had to postpone an upcoming collaboration with rock group Sparklehorse in favor of Gnarls.

In the end though, the two don't mind.  The success has spawned a second album already in the works but don't expect it out any time soon...

Peaches, Feist Auction Undies and More

Canadians. Leave it to them to auction off their 'roos to help Three Gut Records co-founder Tyler Burke buy a house. Artists like Peaches (underwear) and Broken Social Scene's Justin Peroff (boxers) are auctioning off their (hopefully) clean undergarment to help raise money for their friend.  Feist took the sanitary approach and auctioned off stage time with herself and the band to play a 'winners choice' song. Others like Hidden Cameras' Joel Gibb and Michael Belitsky from Sadies are on the 'to be determined' list of donations. But if they are looking to one up Peaches, it's gonna get down right nasty.

The auction will include tons of other visual treats - mostly CDC approved and will begin hitting the bidding rack tomorrow August 2nd. Profits will be split up, "40% to the artist-friend donor, 20% to Habitat for Humanity...and 40% to (possible) habitat for me," as described by Burke himself.

For more details and to bid on thongs, go here.

A video for an album that isn't due out for months? That's Beck and he's releasing the video for 'I Think I'm In Love' off of his upcoming untitled album.  The hip hop sounding song is part of the new mantra he and producer Nigel Godrich (previously worked with Radiohead) agreed to when heading to the studio once again.  Their past works include 1998's Mutations and 2002 Sea Change.

You can check out the video for 'I Think I'm In Love' by going to his myspace page: www.myspace.com/beck. The mySpace posting was pulled due to copyright infringements by the label.

Mars Volta Kicks Drummer

Mars Volta don't need no stinkin' drums! Well, not really, they just didn't need drummer John Theodore as the progressive rock group and percussionist  have gone their separate ways.

In his place, Mars Volta has sought out help from their original drummer Blake Fleming who has been busy with his other group Electric Turn To Me.

The band reported that there shouldn't be any slow down with their current album, Amputecture, and the release date is still set for August 22nd.

The Automatic Re-Release 'Recover'
What do you do after trashing a TV studio? You go back to the basics, punk! The Automatic, fresh off their GMTV bizarre studio rampage, are re-releasing the rare debut single 'Recover' again in the fall.  The band originally released the single last year in a limited edition format but felt the song deserved justice and a better cut.  The band made it official on their site:

"We're re-recording and re-releasing 'Recover' because we didn't feel the original version did the song full justice and we wanted more people to hear the song. The limited edition release last year will always be special to us as it was our first release but we're really pleased with the new recording."

The band just finished up their UK tour but there's no rest for the weary as they are currently in Japan where the punk destruction thing is in we're told.

Clash and Blur Start Band

David Bowie and Queen, Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong, Tony Toni Tone and DJ Quick, Clash and Blur? In the long string of best collaborations, this stands as a potential dynamo. Clash bassist Paul Simonon and Blur (now Gorillaz) front man Damon Albarn have reportedly formed the next supergroup with the aid of Simon Tong on guitar and Tony Allen on drums.  They don't have a name yet but already they dropped the title for their first album The Good, The Bad and the Queen; a concept album due out in January.  We'll let you know when we do.

Jade Tree signs Cloak/Dagger

Cloak/Dagger are no longer just a vague movie reference for pop culture quiz geeks.  The Richmond band just announced that Jade Tree has inked a deal signing the band onto their increasing roster.

The band plans to hit the studios in the late summer / early fall to record their debut EP.  The sound you ask?  Well, think post-hardcore but with a Blag Flag twist.

We'll keep you posted on EP info as it comes around.

Wolfmother Hits US Again

HBO's Entourage and Tourgasim can't sustain these Ausie rockers.  Wolfmother just announced that they are launching a brief stint in the US again in the fall.  Dates are listed below.

In other Wolfmother news, our rumor police have cited the band toying with new material in concert as of late but can not confirm the titles of such.  We'll keep you posted on the possibility that the band will be in the studio over the winter to record a follow-up. Of course, the evidence doesn't lie in the fact that the band is ending their tour in the same city they recorded their debut effort.  No, not at all...
