Video: Beck 'Cell Phone's Dead'

We are officially part of the Love Beck 4Ever blog.  Seriously, this guy keeps pumping out videos for his new album The Information like a Catholic more fertile than the Nile.  The guy keeps adding tour dates as well, albeit sporadically, so keep an eye out.  He's in Philly this upcoming week on the 23rd at Tower Theatre.  But if you can't catch the flesh-n-blood thing, at least you have a digital version of each of the songs off this masterpiece.

Video: Fat Jon & Styrofoam 'Space Gansta'

Fat Jon & Styrofoam have released their new collaborative work entitled The Same Channel this week.  While you'll have to read our thoughts in the full review [click here], we did want to give you a sample of what the Cincinnati underground hip-hop sensation and Belgium mix master sounded like.

Visually, it's like Python meets Mel Brooks.  Lyrically, it's just fresh and fits the mood of 'Space Gansta'.

Stars of Track Tour

Sure it's the worst name a band has thought up since The Monkeys but you can't hold that against them. They may not think their name is silly but they definitely have something to say about music today.  We recently spoke with the band and frontman Jason Bell who recalled most of the music he heard on the radio today 'crap' and satellite was the way to go.  He's probably in bed with Bob Lefitz and his iconoclastic ways to turn the world all things Sirrus. But, you can't blame the band - especially, when they sound this good. To prove it, the band is hitting the road with The Twilight singers around the US and making a stop at the CMJ Music Festival in New York as well.

Starting Line Tour:

Walkmen Cover Lennon

The Walkmen, full of much adored press as of late, have taken a project under their wings.  Instead of heading back to the studio to lay down new stuff, they instead took a 180 and are releasing a cover album of John Lennon.  Pussy Cats was originally recorded by Lennon back in 1974 during a 'lost weekend' in which the artist separated from Yoko. Nilsson, Keith Moon and Ringo Star all lent a hand originally.

Now the Walkmen are taking their interpretation of the album.  Pussy Cat by The Walkmen will be available on October 24th in a CD/DVD format that not only includes the reworked entire album but a short about the original stint called 'In Loving Recollection'.

You can catch a sampling of the album here:

Juan Maclean Brawl

Don't fuck with the DJ. Juan Maclean apparently lept out during a show at the DFA gig on Friday October 13th in Atlanta's The Earl.  He proceeded to beat the life out of a drunk fan who reportedly was messing with his gear.

Note to fans: don't touch Juan's shit.

Not to be outdone by word of mouth, the DJ went to his boards to report the incident first hand:

"What really happened is this: I was in the middle of mixing two records, and this drunken yahoo walks up to the stage, picks up a microphone stand, and starts beating the table that the decks were on with it, which of course sends the mix into total trainwreck. I yelled at him and he laughed at me. From there, I don't know what to say except that he fucked with the wrong person. I walked up to him and short story is I, as was said, 'beat him down.' It totally bummed everyone out. HE got thrown out, I went back and finished, but all the girls had left, the vibe was horrible."

Bring the brass knuckles if you plan to see him live.

The Places Tour

The beautifully haunting vocals of Amy Annelle under the mantra The Places is hitting the road to support her recently released Songs For Creeps this week.  If you are a fan of advent folk music - you need to buy this album:

"Folk is a trick pony that can be altered to so many fits that it often is played free of confusion and altered paths just for the name sake.  Amy Annelle – better known for her label The Places, strays free of these seemingly deep planted formulaic roots on her sixth such effort Songs for Creeps that is bewilderingly copasetic yet anxiety ridden throughout its eccentric ways."

mp3: Midnight Movies Singles Info

Psychadelica proven Midnight Movies are readying their new album Lion the Girl, due out in early next year.  In the interim, the band has plans to drop their first single, 'Patient Eye' on iTunes on October 24th.  The single will be accompanied by a Syd Barrett cover 'Golden Hair'.

Guitarist Larry Schemel noted his affection for Syd as an influence for the cover:

"We've always loved the way Syd Barrett adapted this James Joyce poem into a very ominous yet delicate kind of hymn."

You can catch a glimpse of the song below.  And if you are in the LA area, you can catch the act on the road before they take the long trek across the land in Spring of '07.

Doherty Rehabed?

It's like slowing down to see a wreck - you can't help but look and hate yourself for doing so later.  Pete Doherty appeared in court today for an evaluation on his rehab process and drug treatments. The Babyshambles frontman recently moved from the shady East End in which he occupied a small flat that served as his den of iniquity for some time.

This time, though, district judge Jane Mclvor was less than enthusiastic about the singers improvements stating he still needs to make his weekly appointments under the order - even though counsel insisted he is seeing a separate narcotics anonymous source other than his regular work with The Priory - a high profile rehab clinic.

All of this will be revaluated once again in January where we will - if all goes well - possibly close this chapter of Doherty's uphill battle.

Residents Prep Album

October 31st is less trick than treat this year as we are getting a new album from The Residents that day! Tweedles, the new full length offered by the band under Mute Records is reportedly a new direction for the band - if not local.  The band recorded the album in Romania (of Transylvania fame), and features impromptu recordings of street musicians, local ambient sounds like church bells and traveling circuses.

Not impressed? The band has a trump card.  They had The Film Orchestra of Bucharest interpret selections off their album as well.  The cuts were then layered to the electronic compositions for a unique and moving sound - or so we're told.

Look for a review of the Tweedles in the coming weeks.

Shins Album Details

The Shins front has been teasing us aplenty over the past several months.  First it was oft played new album songs in sparse events.  Then the band enlisted the help of the audience to film their concert during the show from their camera phones - later to be complied into a video for a single. Now it's just getting tease-silly.  Today, The Shins announced that their highly anticipated album, Wincing The Night Away is due out January 23rd of 2007.

The album, which was recorded earlier this summer in Oregon, was aided by the bands singer James Mercer and Joe Chiccarelli - whose resume includes work with Beck and U2.

Pavement Reissued

How do you lose the media and confuse critics while pretty much equally destroying your mainstream audience? If you are Pavement, you release the chaotic album Wowee Zowee. Hot off the success of Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain, the band dropped an atom bomb proportioned experimental effort that freaked pretty much everyone out - including their fans.  In retrospect, its seen as genius.  Equally and rightfully so, Matador is releasing a two CD Reissue of the album under the Sordid Sentinels Edition mantra that will include tons of extras. The remastered compilation contains an embossed slipcase with 64 pages book about the band, some fifty tracks - eighteen of which were unreleased, BBC Sessions, Live shows, and tons more.

Radiohead In Studio

Don't ever call Thom Yorke a slouch.  The leader of Radiohead not only released some solo work called Eraser this year and toured with the group.  But now he's confessing that they are in fact back in the studio and on work for the band's seventh album.  'No Way' you say? 'They just got out of that mess!' you detest? Don't believe us?

"We've started the record properly now. Staring to get somewhere I think," states Yorke on the bands official site.

You just never believe us, do you.  But the strange post went further to describe much needed supporter reaction to the www.thebigask.com campaign in which the artist is urging the government to reduce emissions thru legislation.

No word though on any window of time for the albums release but don't hold your breath; you're looking at spring likely.  This would be the band's first album since 2003's Hail to the Theif.

Mew Tours For Seconds Solo

The Danish princes of ambience, Mew, are hitting the road once again for a second go-around in the States.  After completing their tour with Kasabian, the group is back at it but solo to take all the credit they rightfully deserve.

We had a chance to see them live when they swept through Chicago last and must say, their music is twice as sweet live as it is in the studio - which is fant-fuckin'-tabulous to say the least.

Danish Rolled Tour:

10-16 Neumos - Seattle, WA
10-17 Berbati's Pan - Portland, OR
10-19 Popscene - San Francisco, CA
10-21 El Rey - Los Angeles, CA
10-23 Bluebird Theatre - Denver, CO
10-25 Fine Line - Minneapolis, MN
10-26 Double Door - Chicago, IL
10-30 The Earl - Atlanta, GA

Serious Times Gets Release

Grab your Rastamericanized open minded love and get ready for the long overdue release of Serious Times. Compiled of artists such as Sizzla and Morgan Heritage to name a few, the dancehall cuts have been reworked by the likes of NYC's Federation Sound Max Glazer giving it a new form of energy and seduction. A Dubplate of sorts that is continuous thruought. But that's just disc one. The second half of the package will include all the original cuts remastered from their original 7" singles.

“We wanted to do something different with the music, give it framing, context and bring it to life it in a different way.” explains Knox Robinson, the Brooklyn-based writer and producer of the compilation. “The idea was to give the listener the feeling of being at a reggae club at 4am, gladly having already heard your favorite songs two or three times and still anxiously waiting for a singer to get on stage and blaze a few tunes."

Serious Times is a general reflection of such as the Jamaican music scene is in an amazing flux and movement. Don't believe us? You will on November 7th when the album hits stores and our review page with the final word. Ya-man.
